Here it is… the finished collage! It’s an open question I suppose when to end a collage. There’s a strong temptation to just keep going, adding more and more and more. But this looks like a good place to end it.
You can see that for this last stage I added some words and phrases. Some of them actually mean something and others I pasted on because I just liked the way they looked.
Now, believe it or not, this collage is tied in to the story in TIME SNATCHERS. You’ll have to take my word on that, since at last count I have the only finished copy of the book in existence (well, maybe there could be a couple of others floating around Putnam’s office).
Anyway, hope you like it. It was actually a lot of fun to do.
Things are starting to come together. If you look closely, you can see four postage stamps in there…so I know for sure that this piece of art is worth at least 73 cents. For this stage, I continued adding visual images and I also painted the in-between parts in watercolor – mostly blues and greens, which unifies the piece. Also, as you can see, my Manhattan skyline starting to take shape – made from pieces of gold glittery tape.
I went a little crazy here. Looking at this photo, I realize that some of the images aren’t actually part of the collage yet but I’ve just placed them down on the page to see if I like the placement. If yes, then I glue them in. China is a pretty big theme in TIME SNATCHERS so that’s the reason for the Chinese elements. Same with New York City.
Hopefully this will all come together somehow…
Here’s the third installment of my collage. Sometimes you have to go backwards before you go forwards… After I glued on the gold strips (which, believe it or not are supposed to eventually turn out to be the skyline of Manhattan) I didn’t like them so I ended up removing most of them. That’s the beauty of collage… you can change things around and in the end no one will ever know.
Here’s the start…. I know, it just looks like a pencil sketch right now (or half a pencil sketch since there’s not much happening on the left side of his face) but somehow I’m going to turn this into a collage. I used a number 6 pencil for this – nice and soft.
A couple of blogs ago, I mentioned that I’d like to do something with my concept sketches for TIME SNATCHERS. Well, after thinking about it some more, I thought it might be fun to try a collage, working in some themes from the book. I haven’t worked in collage much… I’m more into drawing and painting…but I thought it would be fun. And we all need some fun in our lives, don’t we?
So here goes nothing. Seeing as I generally do things slowly, this could take a while. But you’re not in a rush are you? Good. I’ll post my progress on this blog every few days over the next couple of weeks.
Here’s what I’m starting with: some cut-out magazine photos, glue stick, paint, paintbrushes etc.
